GVM UPGRADE

What is a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) Upgrade?
A GVM upgrade increases the maximum legal weight your vehicle can carry when fully loaded. GVM is set by the manufacturer, but Queensland’s LS11 modification code allows an Approved Person to re‑rate light vehicles (up to 4.5 t) after assessing that the chassis, suspension, brakes, steering, wheels and tyres can handle the extra load.
Under the Heavy Vehicle National Law, exceeding the stated GVM is an offence and may void insurance; staying compliant protects you and everyone else on the road.
Why Consider a GVM Upgrade?
Benefit | What it means in practice |
---|---|
More payload | Carry additional accessories (canopy, rooftop tent, water & fuel, recovery gear, toolboxes) without breaching legal limits. |
Safer handling & braking | Correctly matched springs, shock absorbers and braking components restore or in most cases improve factory‑like dynamics, even when loaded. |
On road compliance | A certified upgrade keeps your vehicle compliant for on road use. |
Resale value | A blue‑plated, engineer‑certified GVM can make your 4×4 more attractive to future buyers. |

Frequently Asked Questions
How much extra GVM can I gain?
Up to 10 % (110 % of OEM) is possible under LS11 pending evaluation of vehicle components and OEM axle ratings.
Will it affect my warranty?
OEM‑dealer written approval is advised for new vehicles; we’ll guide you through the discussion.
Do I need new tyres and rims?
Only if current load and speed ratings are insufficient for the higher axle loadings.
What about towing capacity (GCM)?
A GVM upgrade does not automatically raise Gross Combination Mass.
Can you do fleets?
Yes – we regularly certify emergency services, mine‑spec and tradie fleets across SE Qld.
